The Kuroshio Extension System Study (KESS) aimed to quantify processes governing the variability of and the interaction between the Kuroshio Extension and the recirculation gyre. To meet this goal, a suite of instrumentation, including 43 inverted echo sounders equipped with bottom pressure gauges and current meters [current and pressure Cited by: The National Centers for Environmental Information of NOAA provided the historical CTD data. The authors are supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Departmental Research Initiative entitled Origins of the Kuroshio and Mindanao Currents (ONR Grant N). Currents Colliding The Kuroshio Swimming Through Currents The Kuroshio houses a large marine ecosystem that extends from the Philippines to Japan. The area is teeming with marine habitats and coral, including Japan's, which are the northernmost coral reefs in the world. Remember. Consequently, the nutrients within the nutrient stream of the Kuroshio are essentially transported downstream toward the south of Japan and Kuroshio Extension area. The nitrate concentration at section PN, especially in the middle and deep layers, increased significantly after , but the nutrient transport did not increase significantly.
At the location of the KESS array, the Kuroshio Extension jet and its recirculation gyres transport of about Sv. This represents a fold increase in the transport of the current compared to the Kuroshio's transport at Cape Ashizuri before it separates from the coast and flows eastward into the open ocean. Borne on a Black Current The Kuroshio, or "Black Current," is the Pacific Ocean's answer to the Atlantic's Gulf Stream. In this excerpt from his new book with writer Eric Scigliano.

The Kuroshio Current—named for the deep blue of its waters—begins off the east coast of Luzon, Philippines, Taiwan and flows northeastward past Japan, where it merges with the easterly drift of the North Pacific Current.
It is analogous to the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean, transporting warm, tropical water northward toward the polar region. The path of Kuroshio south of Japan is. The Kuroshio Extension forms a vigorously meandering boundary between the warm subtropical and cold northern waters of the Pacific.
A recirculation gyre exists to the south of the Kuroshio Extension. Another may exist to the north. This is also one of the most intense air-sea heat exchange regions on the globe, where the warm Kuroshio waters. A wintertime net sampling and hydrographic survey was conducted in the Kuroshio Extension (KE) and northern subtropical gyre during 3 cruise-legs in January–March Strong energy in the 30–60 day band was observed using 39 deep pressure and current records from the Kuroshio Extension System Study (KESS).
Energy in this band accounted for 25–50% of the. sections, the Rrst focusing on the Kuroshio Current and the second on the Oyashio Current. Due to the vast geographical areas passed by the Kuroshio Current (Figure 1), the Rrst section is divided into three subsections: the region upstream of the Tokara Strait, the region south of Japan, and the Kuroshio Extension region east of the Izu by: Special Issue: the Kuroshio Current and Extension System No.

The Kuroshio Extension System Study (KESS) had its field program from June to June (Donohue et al., ).One of the goals of KESS is to understand the processes that govern the variability of and the interaction between the Kuroshio Extension and its recirculation by: Kuroshio Extension jet.
Their inferred transport variations lagged wind-stress-curl variations by about 4–5 years, lead-ing Deser et al. to suggest that Kuroshio Extension transport variations are a result of wind-driven changes in interior Sverdrup flow, with the response first carried to the western.
